ABOUT WAVES DIGITAL ART EXHIBITION 2018

Welcome to the WAVES 2018 Archive. WAVES is a digital art exhibition which acts as a bridge between international students. A collaboration between emerging artists from the School of Engineering at the University of Kent, United Kingdom, and the School of Art, Design & Media at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Between 1st-23th August 2018, WAVES delivered two media architecture installations, one in Singapore at the Media Art Nexus of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), under the auspices of NTU Art and Heritage Museum, and one in the UK, at the Gulbenkian Media Façade (GMF) which is part of the Gulbenkian – the University of Kent’s Arts Centre. The selected artworks made use of digital technologies in the public sphere to connect people, culture and community across geographies, bridging the distance between the two continents.

This cross-continental urban media project aims to build a sense of community beyond physical space, using art to develop global awareness and support cross-cultural audiovisual exchanges. The selected artworks are juxtaposed through two themes, one that creates worlds of wonder and another that explores real-life environmental issues, such as the effects of plastic pollution in water.

Media ART NEXUS

The Media Art Nexus (MAN) has a goal of redefining the meaning of time-based media art in the public realm of Singapore and beyond. It is the first non-commercial urban screen of its kind in Singapore, dedicated exclusively to art content.
MAN is an artist-led urban media platform – 15m by 2m large LED media wall – exhibition space. The platform is one of the various NTU Art & Heritage Museum’s Art on Campus initiatives, a programme that started in 2014 with the aim of “bringing art to people”.  A series of over 30 public art installations are part of NTU Museum Art Trail on Campus featuring a collection that is unique in Singapore.

GULBENKIAN MEDIA FAçADE

Installed in 2017, the Gulbenkian Media Façade (GMF) was an integrated outdoor media platform for projection-mapping, located at the University of Kent’s Art centre. It was the first permanent outdoor projection mapping platform in Canterbury. However, now in 2022, it no longer remains.

Covering 72 metres of surface area, the GMF was accessible to locals and university communities and was part of the Gulbenkian’s long-term strategy to bring digital technologies into the arts, engaging with local, international, emerging and established artists and communities alike, in the media industry.

It was equipped with 3 high-lumen projectors with the dimensions of 20m x 3.6m.
